Dr. Xiangqi

Xiangqi, also known as Chinese chess, is a strategic board game designed for two players. It is highly regarded as one of the most popular board games in China and shares similarities with Western (international) chess, chaturanga, shogi, Indian chess, and janggi. Apart from its popularity in China and regions with substantial ethnic Chinese populations, xiangqi (cờ tướng) is also widely enjoyed in Vietnam.

The game simulates a battle between two armies, where the key objective is to capture the opponent's general (king). Notable features of xiangqi include the cannon (pao), which requires jumping to capture; a specific rule that prohibits the generals from facing each other directly; designated areas on the board such as the river and palace that impose movement restrictions on certain pieces while enhancing others; and strategic placement of the pieces on the intersections of the board lines rather than within the squares.
